Key Highlights

  • Accessing government programs requires users to enter their personal information for each agency repeatedly.
  • GOV.UK One Login streamlines this process by allowing access to multiple government programs with a single account and one set of login details — hence the name One Login.
  • Companies House online will begin transitioning to One Login in autumn 2024, joining other agencies in this unified system.

What is GOV.UK One Login?

It is a centralised platform designed to streamline entry to a wide range of government digital services. It allows users to sign in, verify their identity, and manage multiple public utilities online with just one account. Previously, agencies like HMRC and Companies House required separate logins, but with the new system, users can manage these and other services using the same email address and password, making it easier to manage various government-related tasks in one place.

Which are the services on gov.uk login?

The list of government programs accessible through One Login continually expands as more providers join the platform. Currently, those who have completed their migration include:

When will taxpayers start using one login?

You can already use your GOV.UK One Login to access services available on the platform, with over 1.5 million users benefiting. Over twenty public service providers are now accessible, and more are set to transition soon.

HMRC began its transition in May 2024. New individual taxpayers accessing HMRC’s online services for the first time after May are prompted to create a GOV.UK One Login account instead of using the Government Gateway. Existing Gateway users can continue cooperate their accounts for now but will be asked to migrate to GOV.UK One Login at a later stage.

As a user, how do I verify my identity for One Login?

One Login allows you to use multiple public services with a single account, requiring you to prove your identity only once. Follow these simple steps to confirm your identity using the GOV.UK ID Check app:

  1. Start with the Government Service

Visit the service you need, and you will be directed to the GOV.UK ID check app when identity verification is needed.

  2. Get Your Photo ID Ready

You can leverage one of the following IDs:

    • UK photocard driving licence

    • UK passport

    • Non-UK passport with a biometric chip

    • UK biometric residence permit (BRP)

    • UK biometric residence card (BRC)

    • UK Frontier Worker permit (FWP)

  3. Download the GOV.UK ID Check App

    • For iPhone users: Ensure your device runs iOS 14 or higher.

    • For Android users: Ensure your device runs Android 10 or higher. Search for the app in the App Store or Google Play, or scan the QR code if using a computer or tablet. Make sure you’re not in private browsing or incognito mode.

  4. Link the App to the GOV.UK

Open the app and follow the prompts to link it with the service you are trying to access. Tap ‘Continue,’ and on the ‘Link this app to GOV.UK’ screen, select the ‘Link app to continue’ option.

  5. Scan Your Photo ID

    • UK Driving Licence: Place the licence on a dark, matte surface to avoid glare, ensuring it fits within the app’s frame. The app will automatically capture the photo.

    • Passport: Ensure your passport has a biometric chip, then scan it with your phone and follow the app’s instructions to scan your face.

    • BRP/BRC: Take a photo of your BRP or BRC, scan the chip, and follow the instructions to scan your face.

  6. Scan Your Face

Use your phone’s front camera to align your face with the on-screen oval. Look straight ahead and hold still while the app scans your face.

Once you complete these steps, your identity will be verified, and you’ll be able to use GOV.UK One Login for multiple programs without needing further verification.

Insight

Users sign in and prove their identities to a service only once. Afterwards, they can use the same credentials for all other government offerings on the system.

When will Companies House move to GOV.UK One Login, and how will the transition work?

The transition to One Login for Companies House will begin in autumn 2024, starting with the “Find and update company information.”

The transition will take place in two phases:

  • Private Beta: A small group of users will be invited to access the platform.

  • Public Beta: All users will have the option to sign in using One Login, and soon after the public beta is complete, every user will need to use it.

Insight

Details about GOV.UK One Login are currently limited, as the system is still in its early stages of implementation. Most of the available information is focused on central government providers, enabling users to sign in and prove their identities quickly and easily, rather than being aimed at the general public. The One Login team has introduced a feedback form (opens in a new tab) to gather input and improve the system, ensuring it evolves to meet users’ needs.

Can I try the GOV.UK One Login?

Yes, you can try GOV.UK One Login if you’re using any of the functions currently available on the platform. If you don’t need any of the offerings availed through the platform, you’ll need to wait until you receive an invitation from an agency whose services you engage with.
